Obesity is widely regarded as a pandemic with disastrous consequences for human health. When the body mass index (BMI) is above 30kg/m2, the person falls in the category of obesity. Due to the current lifestyle, the prevalence of obesity has increased almost three fold within the last 15 years and still continues to rise. Commonly affects a higher ratio of men as compared to women.
What is Obesity?
Obesity is a health condition in which there is an excessive increase in the body fat. It is a disorder which affects the body as well as the mind with an increased risk of so many diseases and complications. With an estimated 30 million deaths every year, obesity is a major issue these days.

When the intake of calories is more than you can burn through exercises, it leads to the storage of the extra fat which leads to an increase in the body mass causing obesity. What is the treatment for Obesity?
The health risks of obesity are reversible on a large scale. There are various interventions which have proved to reduce weight in obese patients and also ameliorate the above mentioned health scares.
- Changes in the diet - The first and foremost step to lose weight is by the intake of a proper diet. Reduce the intake of calories per day by deciding a standard amount with your doctor. With the cut down of calories, your diet must include green leafy vegetables, fruits, whole grain carbohydrates and lean meat.
- Exercise – Regular aerobic exercises and cardio will help in reducing extra weight effectively. With the implementation of physical activities in your lifestyle, it will prove a major breakthrough from obesity.
- Prescription Pills – Normally in certain cases, when the BMI exceeds 30 and just exercises are not proving ample, weight loss pills may be prescribed such as Orlistat, Phentermine, Lorcaserin and Naltrexone.
- In rare cases, surgery may be the last resort opted for weight reduction. The procedure is known as Bariatric Surgery which limits the amount of food intake. Other surgical procedures are Gastric Bypass surgery, Vagal Nerve blockade and Gastric sleeve.
